Attitude and Fear Appeal

Attitude (Quester p.g. 338)

An enduring combination of motivational, emotional, perceptual and cognitive processes with respect to some aspects of our environment, a learned predisposition to respond in a consistently favourable or unfavourable manner with respect to be given attitude object.

Fear Appeal (Quester p.g 355)

A type of appeal that uses threat of negative consequences if attitudes or behaviours are not altered.

During the lecture using fear in advertising was discussed. We learnt that fear appeals to elicit an emotional response of fear or anxiety. Fear appeals stress the negative consequences of their engaging or not engaging in the behaviour. It can be questioned whether or not using fear is successful in advertising. There are numerous examples of fear appeal being used in ad’s for car safety features, security alarms, life insurance, quite smoking and healthy eating.

For an advertisement using fear to get their point across, the level of fear cannot be too high as it can cause the consumer to distort or reject the message. The advertiser needs to determine the correct level of fear for it’s targeted group. Fear appeals used to avoid drug use or dangerous driving are much less criticised even though they often involve more intense fear arousing stimuli. Fear appeals are often criticised as unethical. I tend to disagree.

As being a Public Health student majoring in Health Promotion the subject of marketing the dangers ecstasy is very interesting to me, as I think the Australian Government are doing a very poor job at this. The Australian Government has spent millions on advertising the dangers of smoking and yes smoking rates have decreased dramatically, although ecstasy use is becoming more common and rapidly increasing. Last year I completed a major assessment for the subject Public Health Project, and during that time I interviewed a wide range of teenagers from the ages of 15-19. The questions that were asked and the feedback I received were all telling me that teenagers aren’t getting any fear from the ad’s they are rarely being exposed to. (Picture 1) Is an example of fear being too high to get the point across and teenagers were either ignoring or rejecting the message. They either don’t believe them or feel no fear. I asked the individuals what was scaring them the most about taking ecstasy and majority of them said was their parents finding out, getting a criminal record and being kicked out of uni.

Appeals have also been found to be enhanced by overlaying the feelings of guilt and regret, as in the Quit Smoking campaigns, targeting of smokers being not just detrimental for the individual but also for their family, I personally think this idea would help decrease ecstasy usage amount teenagers. If they don’t care about their own health as they are at the age they think they are ‘untouchable’ at least put fear into them about their future outcomes.

Perceived Risk?

“The uncertainty that consumers face when they cannot foresee the consequences of their purchase decisions.” Schiffman & Kanuk (2000)

Extent of external search determined by

  • perceived risk
  • perceived impact information will have on quality of decision
  • available time
  • ease of obtaining information
  • level of product knowledge

Expensive items have a greater perceived risk linked with them, and as a result more information is sought before purchase. The measurement of a perceived risk may vary from one person to another.

The perceived risk for me to book a months tour of Europe with Topdeck is a high perceived risk for me as I have never done a tour of another country before, never booked through this company before, don’t know the other people that will be on the tour and there will be alcohol involved!

With being on a small wage compared to my two friends that are going on the tour with me, I now have to work more days and longer shifts to pay for myself. I have to think to myself…. Will it be worth it in the end being a zombie for 6 months by just constantly working for only one months adventure? Will it really be a trip of a life time like everyone says?
I HOPE SO!!!!

So here it is! My one month tour of Europe!

28 Days, London to London

  • Can this product hurt me? – Not the product but the places and actives might!
  • Robbery, theft, sickness, food poisoning
  • Dangers; skydiving
  • Bike accident
  • Loss of Passport, wallet, camera, money
  • Sunburn
  • Dehydration
  • Jet lagged
Financial risk;
  • What if the trip wasn’t worth the cost?
  • Can I honestly afford this?
  • It may not be worth working 6 months to pay for the trip
  • Having to pay extra for certain activities?
  • Covering sickness
  • Paying for insurance
Social risk;
  • What will my peers think?
  • Having a fight with my friends
  • People on the trip not friendly
  • Language barriers
  • People in general being rude or unfriendly
  • Going to less social activities so I can save my money
  • Can ruin relationships
  • Alcohol- drinking to much to be sociable
Psychological Risk;
  • How can this trip affect my self-esteem?
  • Can be challenging at times
  • Homesickness
  • Visiting the Mauthausen
  • Staying in hoestels
  • Constantly travelling
  • Budget
  • Stress of missing flights and trains
  • Weather
Time Risk;
  • Amount of time researching peoples feedback about the company will be wasted if product does not perform as expected

Fudge Paintbox Vs. Manic Panic

Image vs. Image

I am always looking for unique and interesting styles in fashion, like any typical girl these days.
But one thing I’ve always loved is hair wild hair colours.

Name a colour and I’ve had it!

For the past two years I’ve been a Fudge Paintbox user.

To buy this product it costs $19.95 at your nearest Priceline store, however having a lot of hairdresser friends I was told to visit a hair supplier in my area and only pay $13.50 a bottle. This many not seem like much of a savings, but at the rate I go throw this stuff it really makes a difference to my bank account.

About two weeks ago I was walking around Westfield and saw a free fashion booklet advertising the latest trends in fashion for women. And of course, it caught my eye!

To make a long story short I was now aware that Price Attack was now selling Manic Panic hair dye! I’ve read so many reviews and heard a lot of positive feedback about this product. Bad part was I was told it was only sold in Newtown and being a busy person I didn’t have time to travel out to Newtown for hair dye, so I kept using my Fudge Paintbox.
After seeing this advertisement I went straight to Price Attack and bought my first Manic Panic, and will never turn back now.

It costs $24.95 at Price Attack, and so far is not stocked at my local hair suppliers. Although it costing a lot more, it’s defiantly worth the extra money as you get more liquid dye and it lasts longer.

SITUATION:

Perception recognition; I can get Paintbox Fudge cheaper than in the stores, getting value for money.

Information Research: Manic Panic was only sold in Newtown shops and wasn’t accessible for me.

Evaluation and selection: Manic Panic vs Paintbox Fudge

Store choice and purchase: Price Attack

Post purchase processes: Very Satisfied with Manic Panic.

Bonjour!

Welcome to my blog!

I’m a 22 year old females living in the Sutherland Shire and I’m currently studying Public Health majoring in Health Promotion.  A little about myself; I’m currently working six days a week and my only day off work is spent at Uni, yes I’m very busy!
I’m always working because I have a very expensive habit that I must maintain.. TRAVELLING!!!

I’ve always had a love for travelling since I was young. So far I’ve been to American twice, Fiji, Malaysia, Isle of Pines, Noumea, Port Villa, Mystery Island, Lifou, Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Paris, England and South Africa.

My favourite holidays would have to be last year when I spent a week in Paris and three weeks travelling around England. I saved the money for my own air fares, food, spending money and tours. I learnt a lot of history about both countries and it was an experience I’ll never forget!

At the start of the year I spent two weeks in South Africa Cape Town. I’m always eager to learn more and to be inspired and where else to go but South Africa! I’ve always been a huge Nelson Mandela fan, something I adopted from my mother’s love of The Springbok’s rugby team. Travelling around Cape town, visiting Museums, visiting famous landmarks and climbing Table Mountain were again experiences that I’ll never forget and will always be thankful for.
While visiting Cape Town I had one thing on my list that I wouldn’t leave without doing… Visiting Robbin Island where my hero spent 18 years of his 27 years sentence in prison.

Overall, the holiday taught me so much. There wasn’t a day I went without crying over the poverty, learning about the history of South Africa and that hardships. But it made me very thankful for what I have and has inspired me to try my hardest and made a difference just like Mandel did.

During the spare time that I do have I’m reading auto bio graphs of people that I find interesting. Either it being Music celebrities, Actors or past President’s.  I enjoy learning about other peoples lives, perspectives of the world and learning from other peoples mistakes.

As you can tell my writing skills aren’t the best, but in conversations or debate I hope to make a difference and teach people a thing or two.
